The history and brand reputation of Formations has been founded on quality, service and innovative product lines. Formations has developed an unrivaled expertise that ensures products meet the needs of their applications – as well as market demands.

Formations began in 1991 in Edmonton, Alberta, as a privately owned wholesale distributor of non-structural wood products. From day one, the company focused on service excellence, quality materials, and building strong relationships within the Western Canadian woodworking community.
By 1997, Formations was growing rapidly, opening new distribution centres in Vancouver, Calgary, and other major Western hubs. This expansion allowed for wider regional coverage, faster delivery times, and a broader reach into diverse markets across construction, cabinetry, and millwork.
Formations used this period to solidify its operations and reputation. With a consistent product lineup and improved logistics, the company built trust with architects, designers, and fabricators—becoming a go-to source for dependable materials and industry expertise.
In 2009, Formations vertically integrated by manufacturing its own cabinet doors and pressed panels. This move gave the company control over production timelines, consistency in quality, and greater ability to customize solutions—enhancing value and reliability for their clients.
With an eye on the future, Formations invested in product development and specification services. They launched curated veneer collections and digital resources, helping clients bring design visions to life while maintaining efficiency, flexibility, and cost-effective material sourcing.
Today, Formations operates six Western Canadian distribution centres with integrated manufacturing. With over 32 years of experience, the company leads in service, design collaboration, and value delivery—supporting the evolving needs of Canada’s woodworking and design communities.
